lyrics

Drag Town Afternoon

Red brick wall staring down at crumbling plaster
by the old lamp is a mattress
where on lies the human shell
tossed aside no heart to master
loss of pride she wore her red dress
in the gray rain
of a simple drag town afternoon

three steps down lead to where good things imagined
silver trays and white silk passions
come in numbers for the few
turn in back a courtyard fashioned
in the center main attraction
is the lady
of a simple drag town afternoon

she lifts her head
the clouds race by
the sun refuses to be high
the wind cries out
the birds take wing
another night is closing in

In the dust, records from a time of pleasure
and her books, the poet's measure
tells of sorrow's thirst for love
kept with memories burning treasures
once a rose bloomed in the desert
on the island
of a simple drag town afternoon

she tips the cup
her life runs out
a pale moon rises in the east
the fading hour
light's dimming door
another night of dreamless sleep

In the dust trace a picture of tomorrow
choose a new face now and borrow
a reflection of a simple drag town afternoon
